Abstract
Altruism and profit are two forces that profoundly influence research. As enkindle been seen with the HeLa cells, the research began as an altruistic project but then handed to a profit gaining product. If every scientific experiments and research were conducted for profit, immorality would occur. On the other hand, if only research was based on altruism, hardly any progress in the scientific field would be made collectable to lack of funding and protests. However, the risks of profit lead research can be seen in Southams experimentations and skin cream products today. What researchers privation to do is find a balance between the two.

Conflicts of Altruism to Profit
Over the course of several centuries, research has been conducted to better gentle understanding. Modern science has advanced in its ability to improvement society due to the numberless experiments and research conducted by scientists for every altruistic or profitable reasons. These two often unlike forces greatly influenced HeLa related research. The research first involved with HeLa was for the most part altruistic.



However as time moved on and scientists became much familiar with the HeLa cells, the research for HeLa became more profit influenced (Skloot 2010).
In 1951, a black woman named Henrietta Lacks was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Her cells were taken without her knowledge and pornographic in a laboratory by George Gey. There, the HeLa cells became the first never-ending cell line and a critical step to progressing scientific studies. In the beginning, HeLa cells were used and researched primarily for altruistic reasons. When Gey first discover that Henriettas cells had become the first immortal cell line, he told a few of his closest colleagues and freely gave away the HeLa cells.
